On the 24th of May, the vibrant heart of Auckland’s African community came alive at the African Community Unity Forum, a remarkable event that underscored the strength, resilience, and unity of Africans living in New Zealand. Hosted at the stunning Te Manawa, the forum brought together a diverse mix of cultures, traditions, and perspectives, making it a landmark event for Africans in New Zealand.
A Day of Connection and Inspiration
The forum kicked off with a warm welcome from ACOFI, setting a positive and inclusive tone for the day. Attendees from various regional African organisations, including AfroConnect NZ, ACCW, CAC and many more, gathered to share their experiences, challenges, and successes. The atmosphere was electric with a palpable sense of community and shared purpose.
We will share some of our highlights below.
#1 – Keynote Speeches
The forum and dinner featured inspiring speeches from prominent African leaders in New Zealand. These speeches touched on themes such as community building, overcoming adversity, and leveraging our collective strengths to create a brighter future. The passion and insights shared by these speakers resonated deeply with everyone present.
#2 – Panel Discussions
Engaging panel discussions provided a platform for in-depth conversations on important issues affecting the African community. Topics ranged from Health & Wellbeing and Education & Training to Law, Legal System Awareness and Leadership & Succession. The panels were not just informative but also highly interactive, with audience members actively participating and contributing their perspectives. It offered an opportunity for attendees to gain valuable skills and knowledge.
#3 – National Council
The most important and possibly most exciting part of the day though was the nomination and successful election of the National Council. The council is currently made up of 6 people from 4 regions – Auckland, Wellington, Waikato and Canterbury. We look forward to seeing the impact this council will have on the advocacy of our communities.
Building Bridges and Strengthening Bonds
The African Community Unity Forum was more than just an event; it was a testament to the power of unity and collaboration. It showcased the incredible potential within our community to effect positive change. New friendships were forged, networks were expanded, and a renewed sense of purpose was felt by all.
